Vineyards

Once you have passed the Church of St Nicholas, the road weaves along high cliffs with majestic views of the sea to the right. The road takes you through the vineyards that produce Plavac, Vis’s excellent wine, and some wineries are open to visitors. Around Podhumlje try Cobo 2 [map] (tel: 021-713 750), and near Podšpilje you will find Vinarija Podšpilje 3 [map] (tel: 021-715 054) among others.

Tito’s Cave

Just before Podšpilje, a sign on the left directs you to Borovik, site of Tito’s Cave 4 [map] (Titova špilja). It was in the midst of these forests that Tito and his Partisans took shelter from the Germans in a cave from June to October 1944 and co-ordinated military operations from there. A short hike up some steep steps takes you from the road up to the cave. There is not much to see, but it is a pleasant detour. Return to Borovik and take the country road to the village of Žena Glava 5 [map], with great views of the island and sea. You may wish to stop for refreshment at Pol Murvu, a local konoba, if it is open. From Žena Glava, you can return to the main road.
